Dorothy Hodges was born on October 16, 1935 in Iowa Colony, Texas, and passed away on October 2, 2018 in Mesquite, Texas. She was a beloved wife, and a loving mother and grandmother who always put family, faith, generosity, and compassion above all else. She leaves behind many caring friends, and a family who loved her very much. She married Jesse Hodges and enjoyed 57 years of marriage with him. Together, they raised three children.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Hodges, who passed away in 2015; and beloved daughter, Terry Lyn Hodges, who passed away when she was 23. She is survived by her son, Garry Hodges and wife Kathleen; daughter, Laure Millican and husband Clyde; grandsons, Matthew and Dustin Millican; sister, Helen Schlitzkus; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dorothy lived in Mesquite for 47 years, and then moved to a senior living facility in Mesquite, where she resided for the past 6 years. One of her most recent hobbies was crocheting - she would crochet cellphone holders that were worn around the neck and sell them to the residents. She grew up on a farm where she picked cotton and milked cows everyday. She worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 16 years, and also worked for Southwestern Bell for many years. Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where she was part of the Ladies Society and was known as the "cleaning angel". She was very spiritual and prayed the rosary everyday. Dorothy was very active - she loved to walk, and was a member of many groups such as a bowling league, the Over 55 Club, the breakfast bunch and the Santa Fe retirees. She volunteered at Doctor's Hospital for six years, and liked to play bingo, blackjack, Mexican train, and to do jigsaw puzzles.
A visitation will be held at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home on Thursday, October 4 from 6-8pm, with a rosary service at 7pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, October 5 at 12 pm with a reception to follow at the church. Dorothy will then be laid to rest beside her husband at Calvary Hill Cemetery.
