He grew up in Lubbock, TX, graduating from Lubbock High School in 1951. While in school, he worked at a small pharmacy delivering prescriptions and working inside as a general clerk. After high school, he attended the University of New Mexico, receiving a BS in Pharmacy, and was honored as “Outstanding Senior” upon graduating in 1955.
He met Mary in 1956 while attending medical school at UT Southwestern. She was a laboratory technician at Baylor Hospital. They were married in December of 1956 at Grace Temple Baptist Church in Dallas. He obtained his MD in 1959. His internship was at the Dallas VA Hospital in Internal Medicine from 1959-60. He then fulfilled his ROTC obligation, serving as a Flight Surgeon in the US Air Force at Lackland AFB in San Antonio 1960-62.
After his military service, he completed his residency in Pathology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas under the direction of Dr. George Race form 1962-66. After receiving his Certification in Pathology in 1968, he then practiced in that field until his retirement in 2012. In the early years of his practice, he spent 2 years at the newly opened Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. The Arabian American Oil Co. recruited him as Chief of Pathology Services in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He and Mary spent 2 interesting and rewarding years in the Middle East and around the world. He then returned to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas to be with Dr. Race. He served as Director of Pathology at Baylor from 1986-1998, at which time he took partial retirement, but continued to work in the department until his ill health caused his total retirement in 2012.
He and Mary considered their lives at Baylor Medical Center the greatest joy and blessings of their lives! They enjoyed being members of, as well as holding, different positions in social organizations in Dallas. However, they treasured most their long-time membership at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas. All who knew him will miss him, as he was such a kind and tenderhearted soul.
His wife Mary preceded him in death in 2013. He is survived by brothers, Bill, Don, and Phil; and sisters, Faye Brown, Mae Imgrund, and Jean Reed. Weldon was fortunate to have had his brother, Phil, assist him in so many ways these past three years.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Grove Hill Funeral Home, and will be followed by Intombment at Grove Hill Memorial Park.
