OBITUARY

Edmund H. Miller Sr.

July 5, 1923December 22, 2010

Edmund Hollis Miller, born July 5, 1923 in Austin, Texas to Emily Maverick and Dr. Edmund Thornton Miller, passed away December 22, 2010. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a BS degree in Ceramic Engineering. Ed was cartoon editor for UT's Texas Ranger Magazine from 1949-1950. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Ed served as a Staff Sergeant in Patton's Third Army Headquarters War Room, G-2 Section during WWII, where he was a cartographer in Patton's map room. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by Gen. George S. Patton and the European Theater with six battle stars. He traveled with the Third Army Headquarters across Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. In 1951, he was recalled to active service during the Korean War as a Second Lieutenant and served in the Army Security Agency in Germany. Ed loved the Boy Scouts and was a lifetime member of Boy Scout Troop 20 in Austin, Texas. He was always very proud of his Texas heritage, being the great grandson to Mary and Samuel Augustus Maverick, pioneers of Texas. Samuel Augustus Maverick was one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence and it is from him that the word "maverick" was coined. In 1992 at the age of 69, Ed retired from DalTile in Dallas, Texas. After retirement, he loved to be on his computer, continued to play golf and was an avid fisherman. He loved nothing more than spending time at his place at Cedar Creek Lake. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Hoke Miller; son, Edmund H. Miller, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Peter Carlson of Katy, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew and Claire Carlson; sister, Mary Miller Bartholow, numerous nieces and nephews, and his two best friends from childhood, Lew Griffith and Bill Kinney. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emily Maverick and Dr. Edmund Thornton Miller, and sister, Emily Miller Wells. Graveside services will be held at a future date in Austin, Texas.

Ed was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. He supported their Spartan Band both monetarily and through his attendance to most of their events. Therefore we ask that any memorials to Ed be made to the band's Booster Club.

While I didn't know Edmund directly, I did get to know him through his beautiful daughter Mary and his wonderful grand children. My husband and I became friends with Mary and Pete during our stay in Indonesia. Mary is one of those rare people that you meet and you don't just become friends you become lifelong buddies. I gather from the amazing slide show that Mary learned much of her graciousness, wit, humor, and love of people from her dad. Mary was also my golf buddy, and she always talked about how her dad would let her drive the gold cart. She also always sported a UT club or something Texas Longhorn in her bag. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the Miller family and friends.

Mr. Ed as we called him was a pure gentleman and a wonderful person. He always asked about my children and my family everytime I saw him. We will cherish and remember the great memories and how Mr. Ed made us feel at home at the lake house.
Prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. I know Mr. Ed will be watching over all of us and is still fishing in heaven. God Bless

Uncle Eddie, the whole family will miss you. I thank Mary for posting these wonderful photos of your life. There are so many that make me smile and bring back happy memories, especially the trip you and Wilma took with Mom and Dad, and the special relationship you had with Matthew and Claire. This was such a shock but we're thankful that you didn't suffer. Give my mother, Nanny and Grandaddy my love.
Love,
Lyda
