

Born on September 30, 1923 to the late Philip and Mary Winkler, and passed away on January 9, 2013 in Dallas, TX at the age of 89. Ed is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Joan Edmonson Winkler; daughter, Jennifer Berrier; parents; 5 brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his children, Bob Winkler and wife Vicky, Susan Reisor and husband Ken, Mary Greiner, Mark Winkler, and John Winkler and wife Stacy; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Bea Contestible of St. Louis, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and attended high school there where he met his future bride, Joan. He was an outstanding athlete and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, but he chose to attend Washington University in St. Louis on a football scholarship. Ed joined the Army Air Corps during WWII and flew 43 missions in the South Pacific. Joan also joined the military and after they were honorably discharged they were married in San Diego in 1945 at the end of the war. Ed and Joan settled in Dallas in 1947, where he finished his football career at SMU and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In Dallas, he worked for Clampitt Paper Company and retired as Vice President and Sales Manager after 42 years. He was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where all of his children attended school. Ed and Joan enjoyed many family gatherings at their lake house at Tawakoni. After retirement, they owned an RV that they used to travel all over the US. They enjoyed traveling and cruises to various places in the US and Europe. Eventually he and Joan moved to St. Joseph Village in Coppell. He was an accomplished carpenter and could make almost anything. He built all types of furniture and structures for friends, family and churches. He even kept a woodworking shop in his garage at St. Joseph Village where he fulfilled countless woodworking requests. Ed loved sports of all kinds, especially bowling, golf, and fishing.
The family will receive friends at from 6-8pm with Rosary at 7pm, Monday, January 14, 2013 at St. Joseph Village, 1201 E. Sandy Lake Rd. Coppell 75019. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11am, Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3030 Gus Thomasson Rd. Dallas 75228. The Committal Service will be 11am, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy Dallas 75211.
