

Elena Griesel was born on July 12, 1941 in Astoria, Queens, New York City to her loving parents Anthony and Mary Maffia. She graduated from Assissium High School in New York City, and later went on to earn an Associate’s degree. She married John on October 28, 1962 in New York City and they remained married for the next 59 years.
Her passions in life were her Catholic faith and her devotion to her husband, family and friends.
Elena was a faithful and lifelong member of the Catholic church. She was pleased to serve the Saint Thomas Aquinas parish as a Eucharistic minister and through such organizations as the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters.
She belonged to many long-lasting prayer groups, and hosted a prayer group at her home for 17 years which filled the house with joyous camaraderie. She also prayed the rosary nightly.
Elena Griesel was a devoted and loving wife, an amazing mother, and an affectionate grandmother. It was a great joy to her to spend time with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and give them a good-natured pinch on their checks.
She was an incredible cook and loved to serve her family and friends with holiday meals, traditional Italian recipes passed on from her mother, and special treats like fig cookies at Christmas. Her recipe for Filled Manicotti Shells can be found in the Cuisine, Texas cookbook.
She was a wonderful, loving person whose kindness, warm laugh and beautiful smile brought happiness and joy to all who knew her. She was always willing to help others and always loyal to her friends and family.
Elena is survived by her husband, John, her son Christopher and his wife Linda and their children Charlotte and Joseph, her son Andrew, her brother Anthony Maffia and his wife Gerri, her many friends, and her dog Zorro.
The funeral mass of Elena Griesel will be on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 10:30 AM in the North Chapel of Calvary Hill Cemetery.
A viewing will be held immediately before the funeral at 9:30 AM, followed by a rosary at 10:00 AM. Interment at Calvary Hill cemetery will follow the funeral mass.
