Born in Dallas on September 21, 1957 to Gloria Slaughter Hammack and John A. Hammack, Elisa attended Highland Park Presbyterian Day School, Bradfield Elementary and Highland Park Junior High before graduating from the Hockaday School. She earned her college degree from Sophie Newcomb-Tulane University in New Orleans where she fell in love with the city, and made a multitude of friends from across the country.
After college, Elisa followed the footsteps of her maternal grandmother, Lula Mae Slaughter, and worked for several years at the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. She lived and worked in Durham, North Carolina, and as a former camper, served on staff at Camp Green Cove in Tuxedo, North Carolina. She lived for a time in Austin, Texas before returning to Dallas to help manage her family’s oil and gas business. Elisa’s love of the outdoors began as a child when she played outside and ran wild in the neighborhood until dark and it grew stronger as a young girl through her Green Cove experience. She found great joy in the beauty of nature, and her love of flowers led her to become a Master Gardener.
A loving, caring friend, Elisa was a wonderful story teller whose quick wit and clever sense of humor filled her life and those around her with laughter.
Elisa was blessed with a wide circle of friends throughout her life which grew larger with each passing year. She had a multitude of “best friends” who she treasured and who treasured her. She was especially close to her Saturday lunch group, with whom she met every week for over fifteen years. The loving support of many special friends and family members enriched her life and helped sustain her during her illness.
Elisa was a member of the Dallas Women’s Club, Dallas Garden Club, Dallas Country Club, Founders Garden Club, Junior League of Dallas and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Elisa was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Lula Mae and Albert L. Slaughter and her paternal grandparents, Marina E. and John A. Hammack. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her two brothers, John A. Hammack, Jr. and his wife Terri, Albert D. Hammack and his wife, Melinda. Her nieces and nephew, Jessica Carlson, Julia Price, Shelby Hammack and Marshall Hammack brought her great joy and were the light of her life. She is also survived by her beloved pups, Zuzu and Little Bear.
With a determination to live on her own terms, Elisa approached cancer with a positive attitude and maintained a contagious outlook on life. We will miss her sunny smile and the infinite laughter she brought to all who knew her. She lives in our hearts forever.
