Elnora, affectionately known as Maxine or “Mac” by close family and friends, was the oldest daughter of eight children born on June 2, 1940, to the late Cottrill Sr. and Emma Sue Applewhite.
She attended public schools in Homer, Louisiana, and proudly graduated from Homer High School in 1958. After completing her studies, Maxine began working in the medical field, where she served in several areas of patient care. Her natural desire to help others led her to further her training and earn certifications in home health care, allowing her to continue doing what came so naturally to her, caring for people.
Maxine had a genuine love for people. She was the kind of person who could walk into a room and make a connection with almost anyone. She never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or simply be present when someone needed her. Her kindness and caring spirit were part of who she was.
She accepted Christ at an early age and remained faithful in her walk with God. Maxine was a devoted member of Word Revival Temple, under the leadership of Howard C. Davis, where she served on various committees and willingly emceed church programs whenever she was asked. Her service to her church family meant a great deal to her, and in 2007, a special program was held in her honor to recognize her dedication and faithful service.
Four brothers preceded her in death: Earl W. Riley, Grover C. Applewhite, Cottrill Applewhite Jr., and Thomas A. Applewhite.
Those who knew Maxine knew how deeply she loved her family. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 57 years, Raleigh Henderson Sr.; three children, sons Demetri Henderson (Deidre) and Raleigh Henderson Jr. (Nicole), and daughter Sharon Henderson; one bonus son, Stephen Foster (Amii); two bonus daughters, Tameika Jordan and Phylis Regina Henderson; and four bonus grandchildren.
She also leaves one surviving brother, Frank Applewhite (Jaci); three sisters, Abigail Foster (Blendell), Shirley Ann Burns (Chester), and Minnie Singleton; four grandchildren, Demetrique Henderson, DeAundra Henderson, Ashleigh Henderson, and Javaun Henderson; along with a host of relatives, friends, loved ones, and her church family.
Maxine’s life was filled with love, service, faith, and family. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the memories she created will remain with us always.
