

Elvira Portugal Leal, born on October 11, 1920, was called home by the Lord on August 7, 2016 at the age of 95. Elvira was born in the “Little Mexico” neighborhood of Dallas, TX to her parents Toribio Portugal and Elena Mendosa of Michoacán, Mexico. She was the second of eight children and the eldest daughter. She married Ruben S. Leal of Paris, TX and together they had 4 sons, Ruben Jr., Jesse P. (deceased 12/23/2013), Edward and Matias. Elvira, from a very young age, began working to help her parents support her family and developed into a seasoned business woman. In 1950, she and her husband founded the Dallas Tortilla Factory which is still in operation after 67 years. Elvira leaves behind a large and loving family including her sisters, Bertha Mauricio, Rosa Portugal and Celia Leal, her sons, Ruben Jr. and wife Martha, Edward, Matias and wife Priscilla, daughter-in-law Patricia, and 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband Ruben, son Jesse P., brothers Luis Portugal, Frederico Portugal and sisters Susana Rivera and Helen Corrales. Visitation will be hosted at Calvary Hill Funeral Home on Thursday, August 11th from 5 pm to 9 pm with the Rosary being held at 7 pm. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Virgen de Guadalupe Cathedral in downtown Dallas on Friday, August 12th at 2 pm, with the committal to follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery.
