Era accepted Christ at an early age, and after relocating to Dallas, she joined Ledbetter Baptist Church in 1951. For many years she was a member of the Choir, a very active member of the Mission where she served as Treasurer and a devotional leader, the Director of the Youth Department, teacher of the Women’s Sunday School Class, worker in the BTU, a member of the church decoration committee, the Director of the Baby Dedication Ceremonies and a devoted Vice-President of the Deaconess.
Era was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over 60 years, Harthelma Haywood; one son (Harthelma, Jr.); nine siblings: Isaiah, Zerlaner, Jean, Charlie Lawson, Annie Ruth, Charlie, Jr., Gertrude, Vernon and Charlene; and a number of nephews, nieces and other relatives.
Era leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Catharin Haywood of Corsicana, TX and Irma Washington of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren: Crescentia Hawkins, Sharlynda Bedford (Freeman), James Hawkins, III, all of Dallas, TX and Maresha Ogbeide of Cedar Hill, TX; six great-grandchildren: Steve, Christopher, Tristen, Amber, Ja’Rod and Jordan; seven great-great grandchildren, and a host of loving nephews, nieces, other relatives and very special friends.
