Ernie Chapman, 86, well-known Dallas musician, died Dec. 20, 2019, after a short illness. Born March 10, 1933, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he graduated from Tyner High School in Chattanooga and University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He grew up on a dairy farm, the son of Willie L. and Hattie Pearl Spitzer Chapman.
An accomplished musician who first played trumpet before a career as a bass player, Ernie served in the 3rd U.S. Army Band and came to Dallas in the early 1960's on tour with the Peter Duchin Orchestra. He made Dallas home as a studio musician, but traveled extensively, playing bass for movies, TV, and commercial recordings, notably in Los Angeles, Memphis, Dallas and New York. Ernie made his mark in the jingle business. He contracted for band members, played and led studio recordings for hundreds of commercials recorded and heard in Dallas. He also traveled 12 years with the Doc Severinsen band, playing with symphonies. He received a master’s degree from University of North Texas (NTSU).
Ernie will be missed by wife Diane, son Mark and grandson Luke of Dallas, family members and a wide network of friends. He will be remembered for mentoring younger musicians and as a Southern gentleman with a sensitive spirit, quick wit, outgoing nature and outstanding musical talent.
No immediate service is planned, but a celebration later.
