Eugene Lamar Atwood, beloved son, brother, uncle, and child of God, died peacefully with family, March 23, 2022. Born Oct. 20, 1972 to Gary and Sarah Atwood, Gene was one of the first generation of infants to survive Tetralogy of Fallot. Gene graduated from Bryan Adams HS, performing in the renowned marching band; he also earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended UT Austin and UNT in Denton. His lifelong curiosity, love of science, and unmatched intellect led him to work many happy years in the Tx Dept of Health microbiology lab and the Eastfield Jr College chemistry lab. Above all, Gene loved his family and friends. He felt enormous gratitude to all the doctors and medical personnel at UTSW Clements Hospital who cared for him with the utmost skill and compassion.
In death, as in life, Gene wanted to be of service to others. He chose to donate his body to the UT Southwestern Willed-Body Program so that students, doctors, and researchers could learn and make discoveries to help future generations of infants born with Tetralogy of Fallot.
Eugene is survived by his mother, Sarah Atwood, his former wife, Kelley Atwood, his sister and brother-in-law, Lacy and Jeff Zarit, his brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Missy Atwood, his sister, Kerri Atwood, and his much loved dog, Andy. He is also survived by the five nieces that he so adored: Shelby Barlow (Rendon), Kelsey Noren, Ellen Corwin (Justin), Kate Atwood, and Jane Atwood. He was also proud to be great-uncle to Jaxton, Sarah Blakely, and Ellie Jaymes Mae.
Donations may be made to Children’s Health Dallas.
A memorial service for Eugene will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception at 3:00 PM.
