Eugene Gerald Taper (Gene) January 19, 1937 – February 10, 2019. Born January 19, 1937, Pittsburgh, PA, to Goldye and Lawrence Taper, he moved to Dallas in 1980. Gene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, mentor and friend. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he earned an undergraduate degree in accounting and an MBA.
While working in the Catskills in the summer of ’57, he met the love of his life, Carol. They dated for four years before getting married in June of 1961. Their 57 year journey as husband and wife took them from Pittsburgh to Chicago and then to Dallas. Gene started his career at Bachrach Sanderbach & Company which became a part of Touche Ross (now Deloitte). He retired as a partner of Deloitte in 1994 after 36 years of mentoring and leading accounting and auditing teams. Gene helped in recruiting and inspiring many of the leaders still working in accounting firms and corporations today. After retirement, Gene worked as a peer auditor for the Texas Society of CPAs.
He will be remembered both professionally and personally, not only for his intelligence and dry wit, but his incredibly kind and caring heart. Although he was dedicated to his profession, nothing gave him more joy than his family. Carol was the light of Gene’s life and you could feel his love for her in everything he did. He was proud of both of his sons and the families that they built. He considered their wives his daughters and their families were truly an extension of his. However, nothing brought him more joy than his four grandchildren. Carol and Gene loved traveling together and looked forward to their annual trips with the entire family.
In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by his brother Mitchell (Patricia), his sons Alan (Rosalie), Howard (Jessica); grandchildren Gabrielle, Jason, Samara and Sydney; nephews and nieces, Michael Shapiro (Lisa), Randi Chase (Steven), Steven Taper (Julie), and Seth Taper (Rozana). Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 13, at noon at Sparkman/Hillcrest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in his honor to Congregation Beth Torah at 720 Lookout Drive, Richardson, TX, 75080.
