Frank Edward Crumley, MD, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, service, scholarship, and devotion to his family. Throughout his eighty-nine years, Frank dedicated his life to healing others—as a physician, researcher, husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of God.
Born on November 3, 1936, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Frank and Cecilia Crumley, he attended the University of Notre Dame before earning his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. During his psychiatric residency in Michigan, he met the love of his life, Patricia “Patti” Ann Podesta, whom he married on September 2, 1967. Together they shared more than fifty-five years of marriage, raising a family rooted in faith and love.
Frank served proudly as a physician in the United States Army during the Vietnam era at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. He and Patti later made their home in Dallas, where he practiced psychiatry for decades. Board-certified in psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry, he was widely respected for his compassionate patient care and for his research on adolescent suicide and mental health. His work was published in leading medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and continues to be cited in psychiatric literature.
As a devoted parishioner of St. Rita Catholic Church, Frank quietly served his parish and volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, believing that caring for others was one of life’s greatest callings.
To his family, Frank was the steady presence they could always count on. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose family always knew they could rely on him for guidance, strength, and unwavering support. He led by example, showing that integrity, responsibility, generosity, humility, and love are demonstrated through daily actions. He was always there in times of need, offering wisdom and reassurance. His quiet intellect, calm demeanor, gentle wit, and unwavering integrity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia “Patti” Ann (Podesta) Crumley, and his parents, Frank and Cecilia Crumley.
He is survived by his sons, Joe Crumley and his wife Jennifer, and John Crumley and his wife Juleanne; his beloved grandchildren, Jack and Georgia; his brothers and sisters, John, Dennis, Cecilia “Sissy,” and Kathleen; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, grateful patients, and professional colleagues.
A Memorial Mass celebrating Frank’s life and faith will be held at St. Rita Catholic Church in Dallas on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow at St. Rita from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Frank Edward Crumley lived a life of extraordinary purpose. He cared for thousands of patients, contributed to the advancement of psychiatry, served his country with honor, lived his Catholic faith through service, and loved his family without reservation. His legacy endures in the lives he healed, the family he nurtured, and the example he leaves for generations to come.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
