

Fred J. Gross, 83, passed away on August 9 in hospice care at Legacy/Preston Hollow. Cause of death was metastasized breast cancer. As one of the slim 1% of breast cancer patients who are male, he was the subject of a Komen for the Cure U-Tube video, filmed at his Dallas home in mid-June. (Simplest access: google komen-fred gross) Fred was born in New York City on September 10, 1930 to Bernard and Jennie (Weisberg) Gross. He graduated from Bronx Science High School, received his B.S. from Syracuse University, then went on to earn a Masters in Business from Columbia and his law degree from SUNY/Buffalo. After years of work in market research and long-range planning for Pillsbury and Xerox, he came to Dallas in 1977 for a position with Liquid Paper Corporation. He later opened his own Dallas office for the private practice of law as a Texas Certified Bankruptcy Specialist. Following retirement at the end of 1999, he worked with the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, and in 2010 was named Outstanding Attorney Volunteer at its East Dallas Clinic. Preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Mary Louise Hofer, Fred is survived by wife Harriet P. Gross, Dallas; son Michael Jay Gross (Pam Thompson), Richardson; sister Ruth Levine (Fred) of El Cajon, California; nephews Eric Levine of Long Island City, New York and Jeffrey Levine (Meryl) of Westborough, Massachusetts; and two great-nephews, Russell and David Levine. Fred served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was active in Jewish War Veterans Post #256, Dallas. He was also a supporter of many community causes and a long-time member of Congregation Beth Torah. Contributions in his memory may be made to the synagogue, 720 W. The family extends profound thanks to the staffs of Presbyterian Hospital Dallas (2nd Floor Jackson Cancer Center) and Vitas Hospice for Fred’s compassionate end-of-life care. The Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Hillcrest Mausoleum Chapel East, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas. Burial will follow immediately in the Beth Torah section of Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Rabbis Elana Zelony and Jeffrey Leynor officiating.
