Genevieve Lodowski died January 29, 2016 at Medical City Dallas Hospital. She was 96. Born in Adamsburg, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of Jacob and Julia (Tomkiewicz) Gowaty. Young Genevieve made quite an impression when she began grade school and then corresponded over the years with her first grade teacher who traveled from Pennsylvania to Texas to visit her former pupil some 40 years after class was dismissed. Genevieve was the first female editor of her high school yearbook, was a member of the National Honor Society, was involved in high school athletics and was honored as the salutatorian of her graduating class. While attending the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, she met her future husband Charles at a fraternity party. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, she served as one of the earliest traveling public health nurses in Pennsylvania visiting patients in a wide rural area. After their marriage, the couple relocated to Dallas where Charles completed medical school and served his internship and residency. Gen was a devoted mother to her four children, always encouraging them in their academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. She and Charles were active members of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church where she served as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, sang in one of the choirs and volunteered in a variety of other ministries. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and playing bridge. In addition to motor trips, Gen and Charles were quite fond of ocean cruises, reading on deck, making new friends of fellow travelers and learning about new ports of call. After a relocation within the city in 1999, the couple joined St. Monica Church. Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Lodowski in 2012; her parents; sister, Helen Cicholski; brothers, John Gowaty and Dr. Henry Gowaty and granddaughter Elizabeth Lodowski. She is survived by sons Charles Alan Lodowski (Patricia), Robert Lodowski (Mimi), John Lodowski (Rose) and daughter Dr. Ruth Lodowski; ten grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Visitation with family will begin at 6:00 PM Thursday February 4, 2016 followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM at Sparkman Hillcrest Northwest Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Stephen W. Bierschenk at noon Friday February 5, 2016 at North Chapel of Calvary Hill Cemetery followed by entombment at Calvary Hill Mausoleum.
