George Peters Caruth of Dallas, TX, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2020, surrounded by his wife and children. George was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Born May 28, 1940, in Dallas, TX, he was a proud member of the Caruth Family, whose history dated back to the early days in Dallas. He attended Highland Park High School and graduated from Southern Methodist University. George met the love of his life Jo Ann Baird of Longview, TX. They were married October 23, 1965, lived in Dallas and had their 4 children. George and Jo Ann spent 60 years together. Dallas was always his home. He spent most of his life living on the Caruth Homeplace property; a staple of Dallas and its history. He loved to regale friends with stories of the early days of Dallas and his family’s part in its history. George was also an avid collector of classic ’57 Chevys. He was a member of the Dallas Gun Club, Phi Delta Theta, Dallas Area Classic Chevys and the Ferndale Club.
George is survived by his loving wife JoAnn, his children- Cheryl Caruth Buffington and husband John Buffington, Shanna Caruth, Robin Caruth Schaefers and husband Joseph Schaefers, and Stephen Caruth. He had five wonderful grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Shelby and Dylan Buffington, Nathan and Clayton Reining and Truitt Taylor, his three brothers WW Caruth III and wife Minnie Jean, John Caruth and wife Linda, Robert Caruth and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father William Walter Caruth Jr. and his mother Mabel Peters Caruth. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you make a donation, in George’s memory, to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 10, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
