George Donald Scheel was born in Hamtramck (near Detroit), Michigan, on February 22, 1926. He moved to London, Ohio, with his parents, Beatrice and Larry Scheel. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and graduated from London High School as President of the Class in 1944.
He served two years in the Navy and retired his commission as Lieutenant Junior Grade after eight years in the Navy Reserve. He graduated from Ohio State University, where he lived in a school bus that he converted into his living quarters. It also provided him with transportation, like today’s RVs. In 1949, George married his high school “sweetheart”, Betty Cristee. She passed away in November, 2012.
Most of his career was involved in sales and sales management with NCR, Mosler Safe and American Standard Companies. He retired as President of a commercial printing company and later worked as an independent contractor with a publisher of college alumni directories.
His company moved them 5 times. While in Houston, George and Betty helped start a new church and named it Salem Lutheran Church. They also had twins, a boy and a girl, Mark and Randi. The twins were the first ones to be baptized in that church. While in Dayton, there were family vacations in the Florida Keys and waterskiing trips to Kentucky and Tennessee.
George has been a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church since 1972, when they made their final company move to Dallas. There have been many family trips to South Padre Island and he relived the many adventures and memories spent with his four wonderful grandsons.
On December 13, 2018, George, at the age of 92, joined his wife, Betty, in heaven. He is survived by his son, Mark A. Scheel and his wife Peggy of Houston, TX; his daughter Randi C. Barnes and her husband Shepard of Farmers Branch, TX: his grandsons Jeffrey A. Scheel, Gregory S. Scheel and his wife Rachel, Brian D. Scheel, and Scott C. Barnes.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 7611 Park Lane, Dallas TX 75225, hospice, or your favorite charity.
Visitation will be held at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home on Monday, December 17, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on December 18, 2018, at 10:30 a.m.
Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
