We were so happy to meet your dad in Sonoma when he and your mom were married.  The instant we met him, we felt like we knew him forever!  Kind, warm, smiling from ear to ear and making us feel welcome to the first of many celebrations of that very special weekend for your mom and dad.  Your daddy was a joy to be around, loved your mom so much, and it was a pleasure to watch his eyes light up when your mom was with him.   He adored her and loved and adored you so much as well. Dear Nick,

Your dad was a great man.   He was always so kind - even to his younger cousins.  One of my favorite memories of your dad was when I was in elementary school and he was graduating from high school.  I was so excited to go to his graduation (little did I know that graduations are really boring).  Afterwards, we were snapping pictures outside Moody Coliseum and for some reason my parents had me take a picture with Gil by myself.   Right before they snapped the photo I started to wonder if Gil was smiling or if he was embarrassed to be taking a picture with his pesky little cousin. So I looked up and he was grinning from ear to ear.  Don't you know the picture was taken at that instant! I looked like a goofy little girl gazing in awe at her older cousin.  My mom had that framed in our home for years.  So when I think of Gil I often think of that silly picture and how happy it made me feel that your dad was smiling.  We miss him a lot.

 The years may have passed by, but our memories of your Dad, Gil, are still fresh in our minds and we wanted to share just a few of them with you.   To begin with, he was born on August 29th, 1969, a date that you certainly know by now, but nevertheless is special to us in more ways than one.   In addition to his birth, that was the summer just before we were married in January of 1970, and we were spending a lot of time together in Dallas, John working on a construction job, and Rachel going to summer school.    Just a few weeks before he was born, we remember sitting around the TV watching  with excitement the first man step on the moon which was an unbelievable time in history.  As we were busy making wedding plans Charlotte and Dudley were adjusting to life with two children, Amy (age 4) and newborn Gil.   Just six years later, Rachel became pregnant with Justin who was due around the end of August and arrived on his cousin's birthday, August 29th.   Therefore for a number of years when they were young, the extended family  would celebrate Gil's and Justin's  joint birthday together.   For Justin, having the same birthday as Gil meant he was “cool” like his older cousin.
 As the years went by, your Dad grew up and became a fine young man whom all four of our children, David, Justin, Rebecca, and Laura admired as their older cousin.   As the two of us have reminisced over the years about him, there are two words that stand out as characteristics of who he was …. KIND & HELPFUL.    We simply cannot remember a time around either of us or our own children or for that matter others in our extended family or close friends when we observed him to be anything but kind.   He was especially kind to our children who were younger and as he grew older it would have been natural to seem a bit bored with younger cousins but he was always kind.   For most of us, we have to admit times in our own lives when we have been less than kind to someone about something, but it simply was a character trait that Gil did not possess.   In that regard, he was much like his grandmother, Honey, who lived until she was 82 and people described her exactly the same way; and so to be compared to her is not something to be taken lightly.   But not only was he kind, he was also very helpful, and he was helpful in such a way as to not draw attention to himself.  One of our favorite Bible passages is in Philippians, chapter 2, verses 5-11 where we are encouraged to be like Jesus, and become a humble servant to others.   Your Dad obeyed and he did so in very simple, kind, and practical ways.    We moved to Denver in 2004 and did not know anyone in town very well except Gil who had moved there perhaps a year or so before for a job, and therefore we called him for all sorts of advice, and not surprisingly, he went out of his way to help us get settled including doing some work on our house.   To this day, if we haven't given it to you before now, we have a hammer which was left at our house in Denver during that period of time and Gil and one of us (John) had a standing laugh about it.   For the next several years, whenever I saw him, I would say, “Gil, I still have that hammer you left at my house” to which he would smile and say, “It isn't my hammer”.   I did that on at least a dozen occasions, and each time I saw him thereafter, I would repeat the same line and he would respond in the same manner.   Finally, the last time I asked him, he looked at me and paused,   and smiled even bigger, and said one last time, “Dammit, that still is not my hammer, so I think you can stop asking me!”.    
 In closing, your Dad was a great guy, and we all have missed him since he has been gone, but our prayer for you is that you also would choose to be kind, choose to be helpful, and choose to always put the needs of others before yourself.   If you do that then Gilford Dudley Taylor V will be an extraordinary young man just like his wonderful Dad.   We hope to be around to watch this transpire.

We first met Gil at Ann & Mike's first meeting of their future son-in-law.  He sat at the table with us since Gerald and Gil had much in common.  What a gracious, friendly, easy person Gil was on that evening.  Made us old-folks seem to be interesting and fun to talk with.  We knew that night Gil was the perfect mate for our precious Katy. When we met your Dad, we loved him instantly.  His personality was so warm and fun and that smile of his.....oh that smile. Of course the part that made us love him the most was his deep love for you and your mom!

A year has passed so quickly but not a day goes by without our thoughts and prayers for Gil and his family. In the scope of things, the times we spent in and out of work had cemented our friendship. Over the years you acquire numerous acquaintances but only a handful of true friends. I was lucky enough to call you a true friend..I miss you buddy.

We were so shocked when Gil's dad told us of his passing just a few weeks ago at the Highland Park football game. Our son, Scott, went to Hyer and all through Highland Park schools with Gil.  Gil's dad & Mac coached their sons in football (and were undefeated). We have very fond memories of Gil and were so sorry to hear about his death.

As the family approaches the year anniversary of his death we pray that they will remember all the precious times they shared with this remarkable young man.

Sweet Nick, I've never known your Dad or Mom, but I know many of the people who know and love them. Whenever we think of your Dad, we always remember him as a "Man's Man".  Gil always wore a big smile and could make conversation with anyone. We remember that he never liked wearing ties, and always loved wearing flip flops!  He always looked great in a black suit with a white shirt.... certainly his signature.

We got to spend a fair amount of time with Gil and your mom at dinners and concerts.  We always enjoyed opening a good bottle of Pinot with him.

We have lots of memories of your Das.  There was one fun occasion in particular when your Dad was bidding against us at a charity auction.  He finally stopped bidding and yelled over with a big grin, "Hey! Where's the Thank You?  I just saved you a lot of money!"  Fun times.

A Man's Man.  Stylish.  Friendly. Worldly.  

Above all, he loved you and your Mom.  That's how we will always remember him.  He will forever be smiling in our hearts.

Whenever we were going to an association social, Tom would always say, "Is Gil going?" Followed by "I don't think I'll wear a tie then."

My favorite is the time I called Katy at work and asked if they could go to the Ranger Game with us in a few days and she said, she was just too busy to get away. The next time I saw Gil I told him I had tickets to the game but Katy said she was too busy and Gil said, "Luana, do you have my cell number?"

Dear Dudley and Charlotte -- The Teeter family was honored to be invited to sit with the family at today's memorial service. Thank you. Dudley, when the telegram arrived during WWII that your dad was missing in action, your Aunt Neva knew immediately that he was lost (feminine intuition?). Anyway, I was eight years old, but I remember her saying, "there's a new star in heaven tonight." Those words stuck with me and 40 or 50 years later I ran them through Youtube via google, and found that those words were the title of a song of that day. You can pull it up for yourself sometime in the future if and when you feel like it. In the meantime, our prayer is that with time your sorrow will turn to pride and happy remembrances, and that you will always be certain in your hearts that the entire Taylor family will be renited in heaven. Rest in peace my good friend.  I always looked up to Gil while we were at Baylor, even though we were the same age, and knew if he agreed with me on whatever topic, I was on the right path.  I truly valued his friendship and even though we did not talk as much over the years since college, whenever we did meet up, it was if we had just seen each other the day before.

Few men have crossed my path who I'd want to emulate. Gil is one of those men. Katy, Nick, Dudley, Charlotte and Amy, my heart is heavy...God speed in healing. God Bless Gil. The World is a lesser place without him.

Dudley and Charlotte, we were so sorry to hear of Gil’s passing. Pam and I watched your children grow up to be fine adults. Gil was such a great young man, handsome and witty. I had the privilege of working with Gil for a short time at Medco where he was respected and liked by all. I have fond memories of the many Sunday School parties at the family lake house where Gil shared his time giving the little ones boat rides all day. Gil was such a giving person. At our darkest hours you were there for us and we will always hold a special place in our hearts for you. The despair and grief must be beyond words and I realize that no words can comfort you right now but know that we care. The Psalmist says “That you shall walk through the valley of darkness”, it is not a sprint but it is also not a place that you shall remain forever. Know that your friends will be praying for you during this journey. Gil is now in comfort and is in rest with his Lord. May God grant you comfort also. We wish many blessings on your family and the peace that passes all understanding.
