Gladys J. Groszkruger
December 5, 1924 – February 20, 2014
Gladys J. Groszkruger, of Dallas, Texas passed away at her residence on February 20, 2014 at the age of 89 years. She was born on December 5, 1924 in Westside, Iowa to Gus and Irene (Dohse) Benning. She lived in Westside and attended school there until moving to Holstein, Iowa where she graduated from Holstein High School. She earned her teaching diploma at the University of Northern Iowa (f/k/a Iowa State Teacher’s College), Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1947. She attended summer school at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming.
Gladys began teaching in country schools in the Holstein, Iowa area. She taught third and fourth grades in Arthur, Iowa and then either third or fourth grade in Webster City, Esterville, and Ames, Iowa.
On June 19, 1955 she united in marriage to Carleton P. Groszkruger. They lived in Belle Plaine, Iowa where he was president of the Citizens State Bank. After retiring they moved to Green Valley, Arizona.
While growing up Gladys belonged to the Order of Rainbow for Girls and served as the Mother Advisor when her own girls became members. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and various chapters of P.E.O. International in Iowa, Arizona and Texas. She attended church regularly and was most recently a member of the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. In addition, she volunteered with various organizations in the communities in which she lived.
Gladys is survived by her daughters Carla Brooks of Rockwall, Texas and Tamra Wulff of Omaha, Nebraska; son-in-laws Lee Gilbert and Fred Wulff; grandchildren Victoria Brooks, Alexander Wulff, Austin Wulff, Chera Wilson, Erica Brooks and Heather Dunton; great-grandchildren Taylor Keup, Connor Keup, Olivia Wilson, and Kaden Wilson and sister-in-law Electa Trapp of Rancho Palos Verdes, California as well as nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, James Russell Groszkruger; her husband Carleton Groszkruger on January 20, 2008 and his parents Paul and Hazel Groszkruger; her parents Gus and Irene Benning; her sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Arnold Kies; and her son-in-law Thomas Brooks
Memorial services will be held at 3pm on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Edgemere, 8523 Thackery Street, Dallas, TX with Dr. Bob Poteet of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church officiating at the ceremony. Inurnment will take place in Belle Plaine, Iowa in July 2014. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the P.E.O.
