Harold Eugene Meier, cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and distinguished intellectual property attorney, passed away on January 1, 2026. He was 95. Harold’s long and productive life was characterized by an incredible work ethic and devotion to his family, church, and community.
Harold was born on August 17, 1930, in St. Louis, MO, one of five siblings, to Harold Henry Meier and Amelia Neulist Meier. After graduating from high school in St. Louis, he met his wife, Barbara LaVergne Nathe, at a YMCA dance. They were married on September 29, 1951.
Harold was soon drafted into the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and began to attend Washington University in St. Louis on the GI Bill. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Harold and Barbara moved to Cleveland, and Harold worked at the Bailey Meter Company while attending night law school at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
Following law school, Harold and Barbara, along with their three daughters Linda, Dianne and Karen, moved to Dallas so he could start work as an attorney with LTV. He later moved to Richards, Harris & Medlock, and, in 1983, started the Intellectual Property section at Gardere & Wynne. The final stage of his career was spent at Baker & Botts, and he retired in 2000.
Harold and Barbara were always very involved in their daughters’ activities and they stressed the importance of education and self-reliance. They were devoted parishioners of Christ the King Catholic Church, where Harold served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. He held positions of governance in the Serra Club and was a Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Harold’s interests included sailing, hunting, travel, and woodworking. He also served as a Big Brother to a young man for decades into his adulthood. Harold was sweet and funny, a talented practical joker, and beloved at his final home at Edgemere.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, his devoted wife Barbara, and his great granddaughter, Anya Svrcek. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Anne Sigillito; his daughters, Linda Svrcek and husband Frank, Dianne Sanchez and husband Art, and Karen Eubanks and husband Steve; his grandchildren Matthew Svrcek and wife Annie, Justin Svrcek and wife Zosia, Kellie Sanchez, and Erin Sanchez; and his great-grandchildren Alexander, Julian, and June Svrcek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am at Christ the King Church on Tuesday, January 6th, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s or Catholic Charities of Dallas.
