Hattie Jo McCowan

Hattie was born on January 8, 1932 in Hill County to parents Jim and Trealy Jones. She married

William (Bill) J. McCowan on June 6, 1953 and had 4 children together during their 46 years of

marriage.

Hattie was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother/great-grandmother, and a

cherished friend. She was a library volunteer at Humphrey Lee Elementary School for over 20

years. She also was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star Loyal Chapter #648. She was an

officer in the O.E.S and held many positions over the years.

Hattie’s greatest joy came often from baking, sewing, and going to church as a member at

Hillcrest Baptist Church and later Colonial Hills Baptist Church. She was often found

volunteering at the church library or creating beautiful quilts, bags, and accessories for those

she loved. She passed down many of her signature recipes to her children and grandchildren.

Hattie is survived by her children, William (Billy) McCowan, Judy Rateliff and husband Maurice,

Charles McCowan and wife Kathy, and Anna McCowan, along with 11 grandchildren and 8

great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Bill McCowan, stepdaughter

Barbara Poole, and daughter-in-law Terri McCowan.

A visitation for Hattie will be held Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Laurel Land Funeral Home, 6300 South R.L., Dallas, TX 75232. A funeral will occur Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 6300 South R.L., Dallas, TX 75232. A committal will occur Wednesday, August 6, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211.
