

She grew up in Freestone County and attended Public School there.
Hazel accepted Christ at an early age at the Mount Rose Baptist Church in Irene, Texas. After relocating to Dallas, Texas she united with the Forest Avenue Baptist Church. In 1973 she met and married the late Pastor L. J. Johnson Sr., where he pastored the Gilgal Baptist Church and served faithfully under the leadership of her husband. She later served under the leadership of the present pastor, Rev. Cassius Haynes Sr., until her health failed.
Her passion was cooking and she loved to bake cakes and pies for others.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her late husband, two sons; Willie Taylor Sr., Melvin Taylor, step-son; Larry Johnson, five sisters; Lorine Pate, Bennie Carrington, Ella Montgomery, Betty Dancer, Annie Ogundipe, and two brothers; Charles Durham and Willie Durham.
Hazel leaves to cherish her memories: her son; David Durham Sr., of Dallas, Texas, three sisters; Fannie Price, Arene Wright, Ruthie Cook (Bennie), all of Dallas, Texas, foster daughter; Cabrina McKinzie of Plano, Texas, 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, step-son; Leslie Johnson Jr., (Cozette) and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and her church family of the Gilgal Baptist Church.
