

As a young girl, Hazel moved with her family to Dallas, Texas, where she was raised and attended Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. She graduated from J.N. Ervin High School and went on to attend Prairie View A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Following her graduation from college, Hazel married her high school sweetheart, Luther Nixon. The couple made their home in Houston, Texas, where Hazel began a distinguished career in education with the Goose Creek Independent School District.
Dedicated to shaping young minds and making a lasting impact on countless students, she faithfully served the district for 30 years before retiring.
Later in life, Hazel returned to Dallas, Texas, where she shared a home with her beloved sister, Mamie “Net” Starlin, until her passing.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Clifton and Lillian Scruggs; her sisters, Imogene Gray, Lucille Savage, and Betty Polk; and her brothers, Joe Scruggs, James Scruggs, and Henry Scruggs.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication. Cherishing her memory are her sisters, Rosie Toney and Mamie Starlin, along with a host of devoted nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.
