Helen Zoys, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023. She will always be remembered as a strong-willed loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to all who knew and loved her. She was born on February 23, 1932, in Nafpaktos, Greece to Fotios and Ekaterini Andreopoulos. During her life in Nafpaktos she - like many others of her generation - only completed the second grade. Instead of continuing in school, Helen learned to be a seamstress to support her family during World War II and the subsequent Greek Civil War.
At the age of thirty, Helen married Nick E. Zoys and moved from Greece to the Oak Cliff Neighborhood of Dallas, Texas in pursuit of the American Dream. In 1960, Nick and Helen opened a small diner in Dallas’ West End Historic District named Nick’s Barbeque, which for years served a wide range of customers, including agents from the Dallas FBI, City Council Members, real estate developers, and well as merchants and service employees of the West End. Tragedy struck in 1990 when Nick passed away, but with the help of family, friends, and a generous Landlord, Mr. Robert Lavie, Helen continued to operate Nick’s Barbecue until it closed in 1995, which allowed her sons to progress in their educational endeavors. Throughout Helen’s life, she gave all of her heart, body, and soul to her family and constantly strived to have her sons understand the importance of family unity and obtaining an education.
Helen is survived by her four sons Dr. Timothy N. Zoys, Frank N. Zoys, Dr. George N. Zoys, and James N. Zoys; her three daughters-in-law Andrea, Irina, and Stephanie; her four grandchildren Alexis, Nicole, Anna, and Nicholas George; her great grandson, Ryker; and her brother Konstantinos Andreopoulos of Nafpaktos, Greece.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Nick E. Zoys.
The Pallbearers will be James Boudouris, George Christ, Chris Raptis, Perry Raptis, Maryann Trapalis, and James Liberis.
