Helma Lee Mazon peacefully went to be with Jesus while family and friends were with her on Friday, March 19th. She was faithfully married to John Edward Mazon, Sr. for 57 years who was by her side. She leaves a legacy of three children Lisa Hultz (with spouse, Rick), Shelley Liegl (with spouse, John) and Johnny Mazon (with spouse, Becky) along with four grandchildren; Maddie Grace, Annie Beth, Trace and Kaler.
Helma was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia, on January 30th, 1944, to Luther and Helen Hudson. Luther was a career Coal Miner and Helen was a Stay-at-Home Mom to Helma and her sister, Joanne, who was a lifelong friend and lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Helma graduated from Charleston High School in 1962, where she was the Head Majorette for the Charleston High School Marching Band. She went on to Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, where she studied business and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated from Marshall in 1966 with a Bachelor of Business degree. While at Marshall, she met John and the two were married on May 30, 1964.
After John trained pilots in the Army at Fort Rucker, Alabama, Helma and John moved to Irving in 1967, where they have been residents for 54 years. In 1976, Helma began Mazon Associates, Inc., an accounts receivable financing company, out of her home as a side business, while John was a pilot for Braniff Airlines. In 1982, John and Helma began working together to further grow Mazon Associates, Inc. from a small start-up to an industry leading company.
As Founder and Executive Vice President for over 40 years, Helma has been recognized nationally as a business owner and pioneer for women in business. More than just a successful business owner and entrepreneur, she has been a mentor for many in business and provided wise counsel for others throughout her life.
Through the years, Helma also gave of her time to volunteer and serve on many boards and committees. She served as a board member for Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Irving Hospital Authority, Irving Healthcare Foundation, Irving YMCA, Irving Schools Foundation, Irving Symphony League, Irving Symphony Orchestra, and Texas Fest. She was also an active member at Plymouth Park Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, volunteered in the youth ministry, served on the finance and personnel committees and attended faithfully for over 35 years. Helma also loved playing Bridge and Bunko with her dear friends, snow skiing with family and friends, studying the Bible in small groups and needle pointing.
As a wife, Helma loved John deeply and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage together. More than business partners, they raised three children together and invested a lot of their time and energy into their four grandchildren. Together, they served in the community, traveled the world and enjoyed countless holidays with their family. As a mother, she sacrificially loved her kids and raised them to be loving, hard-working and to enjoy life to the fullest. As a grandmother, she was generous, fun-loving and a constant example to them in every way.
Helma will be missed by all who knew her and encountered her warrior-princess spirit. She was intelligent, wise and beautiful. She’s home now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, while her family and friends continue her incredible legacy.
