Herbert Anderson Jones joined our Father in His heavenly kingdom on Christmas Day of 2016. Herb was an amazing grandfather, a dedicated father, and a loving husband. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years Joan, his sons Michael, Timothy and wife Trena, Andy and wife Estela, and Matthew and wife Sherri, his five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Herb was born to Nora and Claude Jones on July 7th, 1928 in Largo, Florida. The youngest of four children, Herb was adored by his older sisters, Claudia and Carolyn, and his older brother Austin. Growing up in Florida Herb attended the Florida Military Academy and discovered his love of aviation. Upon graduation from the Academy he joined the Army Air Corp and, in service to his country, flew the B25 and C124 in the Korean War in addition to serving in the Strategic Air Command (SAC). He served in the AAC, later the Air Force, for three years before becoming a commercial pilot for Continental Airlines. Herb flew many different planes for Continental, ranging from the DC-3 to DC-10. While living in El Paso, TX working for Continental he met the love of his life, flight attendant Joan Wilcox. They married October 22nd, 1953 and they began their family in El Paso. After the birth of their third son they moved to Denver, CO before finally settling in Dallas where Herb would live for the rest of his life.
Herb enjoyed flying his private planes, a Stinson and a Cessna 182, spending summers on the family farm in Arkansas, and spending time with his family. After retiring from Continental on July 7th, 1988, he dedicated his time to volunteering at Valley View Christian Church, Webb Chapel Church of Christ, and the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas. He loved history and was an avid researcher, going so far as to trace his genealogy all the way back to the 1770’s. He spent many hours with his sons and their children, attending school functions, birthday parties, and just stopping by to sit and laugh with them. He was the kind of grandfather who could sit and play dolls with his granddaughter for hours, make the journey to Disney World with his grandchildren, and make everyone breakfast in the morning.
His family is proud to carry on his legacy and he will be incredibly missed. He was a wonderful man who cared deeply for others, and his loved ones know he will continue to watch over them.
A memorial mass will be held at Valley View Christian Church in Dallas at 10:30 am in honor of Herbert on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.
Arrangements under the direction of Calvary Hill Funeral Home, Dallas, TX.
