J. K. (Jiles Kenchen) Boone, 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, June 9, 2015 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas after a brief illness. Born July 19, 1929, to Jiles Kenchen, Sr. and Charlotte McGee (Childress) Boone in Elgin, Texas.
In 1947, he graduated from Elgin High School where he played football and was named All District Tight End and All Central Texas Tight End in 1946. He turned down a football scholarship to play for the University of Texas in Austin in order to move to Dallas and work to support his parents that were living in Elgin. After moving to Dallas, he worked as a laborer and a carpenter’s helper during the day and attended Carpenter Apprentice School in the evening for several years. He then married Delaine Robinson Boone on October 28, 1950 and they were married for 64 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Mesquite, Texas. He is now peacefully resting in the arms of his Heavenly Father.
His love for wood and building began at a young age. At the age of 12 he went with his dad to another small town where they worked together to tear down an old house. With each board they removed it was stacked neatly in a row. Every nail was removed from every piece of lumber and straightened so it could be reused. J.K. shared with his family how he and his dad hauled the wood back to Elgin. It was there, where his dad built his family a small home using lumber from the house that would soon be demolished. The nails that he had been taught to straighten were now being used to build his own family a home.
He was the owner of Boone Construction Company in Dallas for over 50 years before retiring at the age of 80. He was a member of the Texas Carpenter Local 198 for 69 years. He received his 65 year pin in June 2011. Most of his work was residential remodeling in Park Cities and surrounding areas. He never believed in advertising his business as he always had faith that he would have enough work for his men. Even when the business might be slow, he never laid off his men as he always believed he could hustle and find enough work for them to do and keep them on the payroll for a short time till he had more work. All of his business came from referrals from satisfied customers and from previous clients and their friends. J. K. was known for the quality craftsmanship that he expected and delivered in every home he worked in.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons, other relatives and friends. He was an avid Texas Longhorn football fan and passed the love for ‘burnt orange’ on to his family. In his later years, he became a loyal fan of the Texas Rangers.
He is survived by a daughter Cynthia Boone Carter and husband Jerry of Waxahachie; two sons Richard Boone of Dallas, Tim Boone and wife Lori of Garland; also surviving are his grandchildren which brought him “pride and joy” and great grandchildren who became the “special joy” in the later years of his life as they all called him “Pappaw”. Grandchildren are Ryan Boone and wife Olga of Garland, Micheal White and Zackery Boone of Titusville, Florida and Dathan Boone of Dallas; Chris Carter and wife Carrie of Waxahachie, Laura Carter Barnard and husband Erik of Waxahachie; Courtney Boone Thompson and husband Ben of Rockwall, and Dustin Boone of Garland; and great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Boone, Kyrstin Boone and Geraldine Boone all of Garland, and Shelby White of Titusville, Florida; Troy Gustin, Josey Gustin, Lucas Gustin, Landry Carter, Major Boone Carter, and McCoy Brookes Carter all of Waxahachie; Nolan Barnard and Knox Barnard of Waxahachie; and Tenley Thompson of Rockwall.
