J. McCarty Dowell Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2019. He was born January 18, 1925, in McKinney Texas to a pioneer Collin County family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Doris Allen Dowell; parents, Rosabel Greer and J. McCarty Dowell of McKinney and his twin brother Judge Greer Dowell of Dallas.
Mr. Dowell graduated from Boyd High School in McKinney, and SMU where he received his BBA degree in Marketing. He belonged to Phi Delta Theta fraternity. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater with the Fourth Marine Division for 3 years, as a medic. Following his service he was active in insurance, real estate and farming operations. His memberships consisted of the Sons of the American Revolution, The Huguenot Society and the Associates of the Descendants of the Defenders of the Alamo. He also belonged to the Calyx Club. He was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Greer Dowell Phillips and her husband Joe Phillips, and a beloved granddaughter, Savannah Grace Phillips. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert Kent Allen; a niece, Mrs. Elaine Allen Kerins and her husband CJ Kerins; a nephew, Robert Kent Allen Jr. and three cousins, Mrs. Art Williams and Mrs. Frances Bolen, all of Dallas, and Warden Mayes of Lampasses.
Burial will be on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at 10:30AM at the family plot at Pecan Grove Cemetery on Industrial Blvd. and Highway 5 McKinney, Texas 75069.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Dowell’s honor to the charity of your choice.
