Jack Pogue was born on May 18, 1934 in Sulphur Springs, TX to the late James Alfred and Llewellyn (Stinson) Pogue. Jack had three siblings, oldest brother James M. Pogue, sister Lou Jane Umphress and his twin brother Mack Pogue. The family lived in Sulphur Springs, TX where their father owned and operated a cotton gin which provided many good times, happy memories and plenty of work for he and his brother Mack. In addition to the cotton gin, Jack was a dutiful paperboy, learning lessons and a work ethic that never left him. All his life he loved sharing his paperboy stories.
Jack attended the University of Texas prior to serving 22 months in the US Army in Korea between 1955 and 1957. After his service he went back to UT and completed his degree in 1959. Jack then returned home to Sulphur Springs and embarked on a series of interesting jobs (brick maker, cow milking machine salesman among others) and settled on being a cattleman for the next few years. His business partner and mentor in this endeavor, Jimmie D. Spence, instilled in Jack a deep desire to serve His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In 1963 Jack decided to join his brother Mack in Dallas and learn the real estate business. This he did with the determination and drive that he was known for throughout his life. He joined Mack at the brokerage firm Majors and Majors and was soon the top selling broker in the city. He and Mack left Majors and Majors in 1965. Jack becoming a lifelong independent broker and Mack a lifelong developer.
The most seminal event in Jack’s life occurred in 1972 when he joined the First Baptist Church of Dallas under the pastoral leadership of Dr. W.A. Criswell. A lifelong friendship and collaboration between the two ensued, spanning 4 decades, resulting in the W.A. Criswell Foundation, Criswell College and the W.A. Criswell Sermon Library (online). These ministries became his passion for the last 30 years of his life and Jack devoted every waking hour to ensuring that they were funded and would endure forever. It was his desire that these ministries reach the world for Jesus Christ until His return.
Known throughout the country for his real estate prowess, devotion to his church and the ministries of Dr. Criswell, Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Integrity in business along with an unyielding commitment to the Bible and the preaching ministry of Dr. Criswell are the hallmarks of his life. A man of bashful generosity, shunning attention or accolades, Jack has touched so many during his 90 years.
We, along with Jack, wish to thank everyone involved in his care over these past few years. We will always be in your debt. April, Michael, Joyce, Arvis, Amy, Emma, along with his nurse Paige, provided love and care well beyond expectations. We are grateful.
Jack is predeceased by his parents, nephew Brent, brother Jamie, sister Lou Jane and his twin brother and lifelong confidant Mack. He is survived by sister-in-law Jean Pogue, nephews Blake and Blair Pogue and their families; nephews Michael, Richard and Kent Umphress as well as extended family Lucretia Stewart, Sam Hull and Chris M. Lantrip.
A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, March 26th at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with a visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. A private entombment will take place following the service.
