Jack Davis Sides, Jr. was born September 18, 1939, and died January 19, 2020, at the age of 80. He was the son of Jack Davis Sides and Edith Lowrie Sides who both, along with his brother Jerry Robert Sides, predeceased him.
He was a native Dallasite and was educated in the Park Cities schools. He was President of the Senior Class and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1957. At Highland Park he also was voted a class Favorite, was a three year letterman in track and a two year starter in the backfield for the Scots football team which reached the state quarter finals in 1956.
Sides attended the University of Texas with an athletic scholarship in track and field where he was a three year letterman and one of the top point winners on the great Longhorn track teams of those years. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the Texas Cowboys and earned his B.B.A. degree and then in 1963 his Doctor of Jurisprudence with Honors at U.T. where he was an Associate Editor of the Texas Law Review and a Quizmaster. Sides then served in the Texas Air National Guard for six years.
He began his long and successful law practice in Dallas at Jackson and Walker moving later to White, McElroy, White and Sides and then from 1978 until 2008 he practiced with his own firm. For many years he was a very active trial lawyer specializing in Insurance Defense and was a member of numerous professional groups and associations.
He was a Biblical Christian and a member of the Methodist church. Sides also regularly attended classes at Dallas Theological Seminary. He proudly served for six years (1996-2002) as a Trustee on the Highland Park School Board. He also served as a board member and President of the Highland Park High School Alumni Association. Previously he was a founding member of The 500 and a member of the Dervish, Calyx and Terpsichorean Social Clubs and Brook Hollow Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Laura Gail Sides, his son, Jack Davis Sides III and daughter-in-law Shay Evans Sides, and his three daughters, Mary Katharine Sides, Susan Sides Philips and son-in-law Clay Matthew Phillips, and Stacy Anne Sides, all beloved by him, as well as eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
One of his favorite Bible verses was, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33.
