Our dear mother, Jacqueline Ann Garrett Willits, passed from this life into the next on June 19, 2022, two weeks before her ninetieth birthday. Her son Bradford Willits, her daughters LaCinda Benson and Kathy Willits, eight grand-children and five great-grandchildren, and her adopted brother HA Powell mourn her loss, as well as rejoice for her passing into a better life. At the end of her days, she was more than ready to depart and be with Jesus.
Mother was raised in a poor family, but had a remarkable richness of spirit. Her faith had been nurtured in four different church bodies: Shamrock Shores church of Christ (later to merge and become White Rock church of Christ), Lake Highlands Church, both in Dallas, Texas, and finally Providence Road church of Christ in Charlotte, North Carolina.
As a Registered Nurse, she served people with a passion, especially the poor and oppressed. Her nursing specialty became gerontology, and eventually she earned a B.S. degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at Dallas. Some of her happiest days were serving the elderly in several Old Folk Homes where she served as director of nurses.
Her medical skills also took her to three different mission fields in Haiti, Ghana, and Guinea West Africa. She enjoyed showing the love of Jesus by serving the poorest of the poor. She passed on her passion for missions by serving on several mission committees over her years.
Mother always had a smile and a good word for people. Many will remember the countless cards that she sent out almost every day. When I talk to others about my mom, invariably someone pipes up to say that they have received a birthday card from mom for years. Amazing. She was an energetic and creative hard worker for her Lord, until a long life of hard service began to take its toll on her body. She was ready to go and run in the park with Jesus. It makes me smile to imagine that scene.
