Jim was born November 9, 1928 in Coleman, Texas to James H. Thornhill, Sr. and Helene Baker Thornhill. He was born minutes before his twin sister, Jean.
Jim loved classical music, building things, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches but most of all, he loved Dottie, his wife of 59 years.
A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Jim earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Texas in 1951 and a law degree from SMU in 1954.
Drafted into the Army immediately after graduation, he was assigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps School at Fort Holabird, Maryland. On completion of this training, he returned to Dallas where he married Dorothy Edwards (Dottie) on March 19, 1955. After a 4-day honeymoon, he was transferred to Seoul, Korea where he served until his discharge in 1957.
After his return to Dallas, he practiced law until 1989, when he moved his office to Houston to perform contract work for the Right of Way Department, Dow Pipeline Company. For 20 years he commuted weekly from his home in Garland to Houston, returning happily every weekend to Dottie and the home they built on Lake Ray Hubbard. He retired in 2000 and spent the next 13 years mowing his 2 acre property and adding decks, patios and gardens to complete his landscaping. In October 2013, he and Dottie moved to Rockwall.
Jim is survived by his wife, his twin sister, Jean Adwan, brother-in-law John Edwards, S.J., sisters–in-law Joyce Johnson (Richard), Loyce Nussbaum (Martin).
