Jake Weatherford, 73, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children, on Sunday, February 10, 2019 after battling Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in Dallas on September 17, 1945 to Lynn Charles Weatherford and Gladys Stough Weatherford and was preceded in death by his parents, sister Susanna (Susie) Redford, and brother Lynn Stough Weatherford. Other than his college years spent in Austin and a sojourn in Manhattan, Jake lived in Dallas and attended Hillcrest High School, where because of his friendly personality he made many lifelong friends.
Jake attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he played football and joined Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, making more lasting friendships. Upon graduation, he joined the Army National Guard.
On May 31, 1969 Jake married Cherrie Jean Wheeler, and they were happily married for 49 years. They raised a son, Eric Jackson, and a daughter, Amy Jean, in University Park. Jake coached YMCA soccer and football teams and loved family vacations spent skiing, fishing, and relaxing at the beach. During the last 20 years he liked to visit Santa Fe, where he played golf and enjoyed fly fishing on the Pecos River.
Beginning his career as a stockbroker with E. F. Hutton, Jake quickly moved up to management and then spent many years as an institutional broker. In his later years he sold research on the stock and bond markets to financial institutions. A humble man, over the years Jake quietly volunteered at Big Brothers Big Sisters, Voice of Hope ministries, and Dallas Can Academy.
Jake is survived by his wife, Cherrie, his son, Eric and wife Mary Beth, and his daughter, Amy and husband Alan Henry. Jake was “Pops” to his grandchildren, Sydney and Luke Weatherford and Harper and Drew Henry. He is also survived by sister Gena Weatherford, brother-in-law William Redford, six nephews, and his sweet dog, Sadie.
A celebration of Jake’s life will be held at Highland Park Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, February 19, at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Dallas or the charity of your choice.
