Jean Meredith Darmer Crisp received her promotion into God’s heavenly kingdom on May 27, 2018, after spending 97 years in training; 59 of those years spent in Dallas, Texas. She was welcomed into the family of Raymond and Nellie Meredith on September 16, 1920, on a farm in Delphos, Kansas. She loved to reflect on her early years living in her hometown of Wichita, Kansas, in the company of loving parents, her brother, James, and three sisters, Iona, Winifred and Marceline. She would regale her children and grandchildren with adventure stories of her youth as she, her brother, and their friends would canoe over to a small island near their home and pretend to be Indians living in the teepee on that island. Summers were filled with adventures!
In Wichita, Jean attended East High School, Friends University and Wichita State University, where she met her future husband, Mark Robertson Darmer. The couple married in 1941, just ahead of the attack on Pearl Harbor. While her husband served as a B-29 bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps, Jean joined the war effort by working in the accounting department at Boeing Aircraft Company, then located in Wichita. Following the war, Mark held several positions, but then joined the Coleman Company where his promotions led the family from Wichita to Minneapolis, Minnesota; Peoria and Sterling, Illinois; and, then, back to Wichita in 1955.
In 1959, Mark and Jean moved, with daughters, Judy, Susan, and Linda, to Dallas where the family became active members of Park Cities Baptist Church. Following the death of Mark in 1966, Jean returned to the business world as a legal secretary. While working full time, she completed her studies in real estate at Southern Methodist University and acquired her broker’s license. She retired from her position as office manager at AARP in 1990, at age 70, where she enjoyed “organizing things” very much.
Jean Crisp loved to travel with friends and family members, and over time, visited most of the United States, Russia and parts of Europe. She enjoyed membership in several book clubs and a dinner club; remarking that she was blessed when she visited church members who were home bound or in nursing homes. She participated in Meals on Wheels and hospice programs offered by the Visiting Nurses Association for many years. She was an inspiring author who kept a book about clouds constantly evolving in her mind!
While living in Dallas, Jean experienced a special pleasure while spending time with her daughters and their families: daughter Judy Ferguson (Hugh III) and their children, Hilary and Hugh; daughter Linda Ladd (George, deceased) and her children Elizabeth, Meredith, and Gretchen. In 2015, Jean made the decision to move to Georgetown, at the invitation of her daughter Susan Brundidge (Larry), where she spent time with their children, Blair, Blake and Paige.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie and Raymond Meredith; her brother James Meredith (Nell) of Kansas City, Kansas; her sister Iona Hunter (Ray) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her sister Marceline Johnson (Bill) of Eugene, Oregon. She is survived by her sister Winifred Wohlgemuth (Dick) of Colorado Springs, Colorado. In addition to her daughters, Jean is survived by eight grandchildren: Elizabeth Beshear (David), Hilary Pond, Meredith Ladd (Chris), Blair Burton (Mike), Gretchen Barrientos (Dan), Paige Ueltschey (Chip), Hugh Ferguson IV (Katie), and Blake Brundidge (Allison). In age order, her 19 great-grandchildren are as follows: Austin Ladd, Ava Pond, William Pond, Chase Ueltschey, Margo Ladd, Becca Ueltschey, Valentine Ueltschey, Arno Ladd, Ellie Beshear, Ben Ueltschey, Charlie Burton, Margaret “Dovey” Burton, Xander Barrientos, Gage Beshear, Ben Beshear, Hallie Brundidge, Brady Brundidge, Felicity Barrientos and Hugh Ferguson V.
