

She was born on April 5, 1949 in Carthage, Texas to Harley Lee Groom, Sr. and Glady (Heddin) Groom. Jeanie grew up as the fifth of six children in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, Texas near H. Grady Spruce High School. Later she went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Dallas Baptist College in May 1974 and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas in May 1989. She married her high school sweetheart/ Richard Maddox on March 7, 1969 at his parents’ home in Pleasant Grove and the couple had two children. Before her collegiate years Jeanie was a church pianist for her father’s church in Dallas, Texas and later served as pianist at First Baptist Church Mesquite, Texas. Postgraduate, Jeanie became a private vocal coach and choral director in several North Texas schools for many years and was a profound musical influence on her students.
In her spare time, Jeanie enjoyed diligently practicing and perfecting her craft of playing piano and singing. She spent many hours working with her students, accompanying them for contests and performing herself. She also enjoyed the time she got to travel and dabbled in many crafts. Her family and friends will always remember her as a loving mother, fabulous musician and caring teacher.
Jeanie is preceded in death by her parents Harley Lee Groom, Sr. and Gladys (Heddin) Groom; her siblings, Wedsel Gary Groom, Sr. and Harley Lee Groom, Jr.
Jeanie is survived by her husband of 51 years Richard Maddox, her daughter, Tina (Maddox) Platter and husband Rob Platter; their children, Ryan Platter and Kaylee Platter; her son, David Maddox and his wife Lauren (McCoy) Maddox and their children Joel and Liam Maddox; Her sisters, Adella Soape, Glenda Groom and Gail McMullin.
Due to COVID-19, no services or viewing will be held at this time. Her cremation will take place on April 15. A memorial service will be planned within the next few months at which time information will be given. The family is grateful for the condolences but declines flowers and donations.
