Annie Jewel Callahan was born on January 22, 1943, in Milam County, to the parentage of the late Johnny and Migheon Wesley. She accepted Christ at an early age at the Coxes Providence A.M.E. Church in Milam County. Jewel, as everyone called her, graduated from Aycock High School in Rockdale, Texas, in 1961. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Dallas, Texas, and started working at Hardeman’s Barbecue. Her big break came when she started working at Methodist Dallas Medical Center as a Diatetic Technician. After she retired from the hospital, she started her own bakery and became recognized as one of the foremost bakers in the region. People often said, “If you never had any of Jewel’s cake, you missed out.” Jewel met Joe H. Callahan, and they were married on May 24, 1968. This union produced two children, Joey Lamonte and Janay LaShun (ne ne). Jewel was a member of the St. Luke Presbyterian Church for many years. After a long and complicated battle with diabetes, on a Sunday morning, February 8th, the Almighty God declared her battle must end, thus calling her from labor into her eternal reward. Annie Jewel leaves to cherish her memories, her former husband, Joe Callahan; her two children, Joey and Jenay (ne ne) Callahan of Dallas; four grandchildren, Janetra Johnson, Jonathan, Jerrell and Jaden Callahan; one great-granddaughter, Je’Mariyah; brother, Freddie Wesley and wife, Gloria of Dallas; daughter-in-law, Dianna; special nephew and niece, Garland and LaTonya Bennett of Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and friends. Her brother, Samuel D. Rosemond, and her sisters, Bobbie J. Bell, Dorothy Ray Williams, ‘Vonnie D. Williams, JoAnn Mitchell and Jacquelyn Smith, and her parents all preceded her in death.
