Joan (Reid) Pogue of Dallas, TX, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023, in Dallas, Texas. She was the first child born to Raymond and Edra (Styles) Reid on November 15, 1934, in Parrish, AL.
Joan grew up in Birmingham, AL, and graduated from Tarrant High School in 1952. She attended college in Birmingham, Alabama and Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS. Joan went to work for Traveler’s Insurance Co. in Birmingham, AL, where she met her future husband, Ralph E. Pogue. They married in January 1957 and lived for the next five years in Birmingham, AL, and Mobile, AL, while both continued to work for Traveler’s Insurance Company. In 1962, they moved to Aberdeen, MS, where Ralph opened a new law practice.
Joan was very involved in the Aberdeen community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Aberdeen where she taught Sunday School ,Vacation Bible School and was a member of the Women’s Sunday School class for many years. She was a member of the Aberdeen Golf and Country Club, Old Waverly Golf Club, West Point, MS, a member of several bridge clubs, social clubs and community service clubs. Joan was voted onto the Best Dressed list many times throughout her years in Aberdeen. In 1962, she welcomed her first daughter, Pam, and in 1963, she welcomed her second daughter, Tracie. Joan was the consummate wife, mother and homemaker. She was always available for her family. Joan did all that she could to support her family in their endeavors. Joan was truly the kindest and sweetest, most caring person in the world. For 40 years, Joan and Ralph lived in Aberdeen and made a life together. They traveled the world many times over and spent their free time with the many close friends that they had made over the years.
In their later years, Joan and Ralph moved to Dallas to be closer to their daughter and grandson. Joan loved the city and threw herself into her new life in Dallas. She built a new home, went back to work and made many new friends. Joan believed that staying in the work force would help keep her mind sharp. She was not interested in retirement.
Joan loved reading, trying new restaurants, traveling, and spending time with her family. She will always be remembered as an exceptional, loving mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, to all that knew and loved her. Joan was fiercely independent until her final days. She had a heart of gold and she was always kind and welcoming to all that crossed her path. The word people used most when describing Joan was “sweet.” Joan was a shining example to her family of how to live life with grace and dignity. She will be missed by her loving family more than words can express.
Joan is survived by daughters, Pamela Elizabeth Pogue of Dallas, TX, and Tracie Lynn Pogue of Arlington, VA; grandson, Terence Kramer Babilla of Dallas, TX; sisters, Virginia Householder of Parrish, AL, Peggy Fitzgerald of Meridian, MS, Jan Reid of Ringgold, GA; brothers, John Reid and his wife, Betty of Talladega, AL, Ralph Reid and his wife, Donna of Meridian, MS.
Joan is preceded in death by her brother, Jim Reid (Sharon) of Hoover, AL, and sister, Jackie Reid Moore (Doug) of Tuscaloosa, AL.
The family would like to give a special “thank you” to Rebecca, Kay, Acqua and Pastor Barrett at “Holding Hands Hospice” for the love and care they gave Joan at the end of her life. They went above and beyond in supporting Joan and her family during this difficult time.
Private services for Joan will be held at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN, to First Baptist Church of Aberdeen, MS, or to the charity of your choice.
