Johnny was born on November 15, 1944, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The third of six children, he grew up surrounded by both immediate and extended family in the Taylorville community south of Tuscaloosa. His parents, George and Ida Mae Carter, taught their children to love and serve the Lord through faith and good works. As heads of the Carter household, they led by example in their dedication to faith, with Mr. Carter serving as a deacon at their church and Mrs. Carter leading worship as church pianist and Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years.
Johnny excelled academically and graduated first from Boteler High School and later from Stillman College in 1967.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970, including service in South Korea and Panama. This loving, gentle giant married Reva Elizabeth Robinson on December 26, 1970. That same year, he began his career with the Dallas Independent School District. He served as a social studies teacher and athletic coach at Cary Middle School and W. T. White High School, where he was also head basketball coach.
A soft-spoken, godly man of love, peace, service, and purpose, Johnny retired in 2002. He was a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and participated in many church activities, bible studies and Dallas Area Interfaith. Following retirement, he volunteered for many years at its food pantry and became very active in Worldwide Marriage Encounter.
Johnny was a husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, teacher, coach, and friend who lived his life by the Golden Rule.
