Joe is preceded in death by his parents, William and Loretta Erwin, and his brothers, William (Bill), Robert (Bob) and James (Jim) Erwin. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Susan Cleaver and William (Bill) Erwin; brothers, Jack and Tom Erwin; former wife, Carolyn Sterling; grandchildren, Natalie, Jonathan and Liam Erwin; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Joe was born on May 5, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before graduating from Loyola University in 1957. He worked in the insurance industry for 40 years and was a volunteer mediator for the Texas Court System. Joe was an active member of the West Houston Democratic Club, and was extremely passionate about equality for all people. An avid runner until beset with health problems at the age of 76, he completed eight marathons.
