

Juanita Carrington Burks was born on May 29, 1924 to Alvin and Crinabelle Carrington. She attended Abilene Christian University and Texas Christian University, where she studied drama and literature. Nita played the role of Nora in the play “A Doll House” and the role of Eileen in “My Sister Eileen” at TCU. She worked as an English and drama teacher and school counselor. Nita directed plays and school programs and helped to open Skyline High School and the magnet school of health professions in DISD. Nita also taught Sunday school classes to children and enjoyed reading the Bible. Nita loved reflecting on memories from her schools and students through the final days of her life, and she would often quote lines from her favorite poetry and scripture during conversation.
Nita married Bob Burks in May 1946. They had two children, Beverly and Robert. In retirement, Nita enjoyed spending time with family and her many friends. She learned to play tennis in her 60s and taught the sport to her grandchildren. The family enjoyed road trips to Galveston in Nita and Bob’s motorhome.
Nita is survived by her daughter Beverly, son-in-law Mike, grandchildren Robert, Crissie, and Michael and granddaughter-in-law Christie, and great-grandsons Miles, Benjamin, Drew, and Wesley. She is preceded in death by her husband Bob and son Robert.
