Karan Jane Goldsmith Callaway, beloved wife of 50 years, devoted mother and grandmother, and friend to all, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2026, in Dallas, TX, following an unexpected medical crisis.
The oldest of five children, Karan was born in Dallas, TX, where she lived for the majority of her life. She was a 1971 graduate of Lake Highlands High School and a 1975 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. She married Joe Callaway, a 1970 Lake Highlands High School graduate – and one very lucky guy - on March 13, 1976. She was the love of Joe’s life and the girl of his dreams. As Karan drew her last breaths on the morning of June 24th, Joe was at her bedside, holding her hand, playing music she liked, professing his love, and thanking her for loving him. And, expressing how grateful he was to God for letting him be in Karan’s life.
While Joe attended law school, Karan worked a variety of jobs - including bank teller, retail sales, and geological drafting. She could fearlessly jump in, do anything, and tackle any task. A perfectionist with a jeweler’s eye for fine detail, drafting suited her perfectly. In a different life, she might have been an architect. Karan had many different talents and skills, and had wide ranging interests in geology, archeology, and genealogy. She could fit in anywhere, in any group. She was in several organizations such as DAR, DRT, UDC and Delta Gamma, and she was a Lifetime PTA member. Karan was humble, selfless, and an unfailingly kind and loving person who found something to like in everyone and gave everyone the benefit of the doubt.
However, the most important and personally fulfilling part of Karan’s life was being a mother to her four children: Reid Callaway, Lane Callaway, Camille Callaway Landry, and Sean Callaway. Motherhood came naturally to her, a credit to her Goldsmith family and upbringing. Karan was always patient, kind, loving, forgiving, generous, supportive, protective, flexible, and much, much more. She was the best mother her children could ever hope for. That love fully carried over to her grandchildren, whom she adored.
Karan was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Taffy Goldsmith. She is survived by her husband and her four children; daughters-in-law, Natalia Callaway, M.D. and Rachel Callaway; son-in-law, Chris Landry; eight grandchildren, Anya Callaway, Kira Callaway, Vincent Callaway, Emmett Callaway, Mason Landry, Cal Landry, Mack Landry, and Cole Callaway. As a bonus blessing, a ninth grandchild is due to arrive in October. Karan is also survived by four siblings, Malinda Moor (Gary), Mark Goldsmith (Kim), Susie Abughazaleh (Aladin), Rebecca Romano (Frank); Aunt Teresa and Uncle Larry Goldsmith; sister-in-law Lynne Davis; and, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Karan was a beautiful person, inside and out. She always thought of other people before herself. Her passing is beyond devastating to her family. But faith sustains us, and we are supremely comforted by the knowledge that all pain and suffering has ceased, and that she now resides in the Kingdom of God. We will cherish our memories of her and hold them in our hearts forever.
Karan’s funeral service is Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Family only interment will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to dementia research, Parkinson’s research, The Retina Foundation of the Southwest, or a charity of your choice.
