

Katie Marie McKinley was born on February 6, 1950, in Overton, Texas to Johnnie Lee Sr. and Lucile Ector. Throughout her 75 years, she cultivated a life rooted in faith, hard work, and an unwavering love for her family. She passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in Dallas, Texas.
A commitment to education and service defined Katie’s professional legacy. She dedicated many years to Business Administration with Lancaster ISD before retiring from Cedar Hill ISD in 2014. To those who worked alongside her, she was a model of resilience, a steady hand and a kind heart who met every challenge with dignity.
Having walked her earthly journey with courage, Katie has now claimed her eternal crown.
Katie is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Johnnie Lee Sr. and Lucile Ector, and her brother, Johnnie Lee Ector Jr.
Her legacy of love continues through those who survive her: her husband, Melvin McKinley Jr.; her children, Charles McKinley, Shomari McKinley, and Akilah McKinley; her daughter-in-law, Jacqueline McKinley; her sister, LuTricia Wafer and brother-in-law, Leon Wafer; her sisters-in-law, Mary Duncan and Shelia McKinley and brother-in-law, Volney Duncan; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
The light of Katie’s later years was undoubtedly her beloved grandson, Julian McKinley. He brought her endless joy, which will be a true example of her gentle spirit and the boundless love she poured into his heart.
Her life was a living testament to the words of James 1:12:
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life.”
