Sun shining on her golden brown hair, Leona glanced at the net with determination and served the ball. Throughout her youth, the tennis courts were her happy place. She was an excellent student, reluctant pianist, and enthusiastic athlete. The pinnacle of success came when she and her doubles partner won the Woman’s Championships in the state of Oklahoma.
Kelley became her husband and tennis partner for 70 years. They shared dreams and goals. After World War II, Leona sacrificed her dream of a college degree, working while Kelley pursed his. They bought a home; had a family; and while Linda and Carol were young, played tennis. Cheering for the Sooners during the Texas-OU football game was a family ritual.
Time passed, the tennis rackets retired for another day. Leona applied the focus, agility, practice, and determination she learned in tennis to other activities. She was a leader in Camp Fire Girls for many years. She baked and decorated beautiful cakes for family and church functions. With her daughters grown she devoted her time teaching Sunday School at her beloved church and joining Bible Study Fellowship where she was a group leader for many years. Her library filled with books on theology was her pride and joy.
After a time, she and Kelley never played tennis again, but they remained partners to the end. Life was difficult after his death. With a lifelong spirit of determination combined with leadership skills, she soldiered on. Her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are a testament to her faith, her love, and her strength. We all benefitted from her influence in our lives and cherish her memory.
She lived these words from the hymn, Amazing Grace:
"Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
and grace will lead me home."
