Leonard James Kirkpatrick, known as "Smooth" was born on September 11, 1975, in Dallas, Texas, to James and Josephine Kirkpatrick. He peacefully transitioned from this life to eternity on June 30, 2026.
Leonard was educated in the Garland Independent School District and was known for playing in the school’s band. Following in the footsteps of his father, Leonard began his professional driving career as a cement drum truck driver. Through his dedication and hard work, he was later promoted to a dispatching position. Leonard also spent some time as an over-the-road truck driver, a profession he loved and enjoyed until health challenges prevented him from continuing.
Leonard was first united in marriage to Demetrice "Shun" Banks, and from this union two sons were born, Devin and Joveon Kirkpatrick. His boys were his pride and joy.
Leonard cherished his time by making people laugh, talking about family and cherished memories of loved ones, and cooking with his mother. Leonard could out cook most women, and he often cooked his famous enchiladas for lunch or dinner.
Leonard loved cooking, fishing, candle making, photography, videography, and wood crafting. Leonard loved family. He shared a close relationship with his cousin, Laurence and had a long-lasting friendship with his best friend, Bobby, who he loved as a blood brother. Leonard enjoyed conversations debating with his brother Corey over who was the best cook out of the two. Leonard held a special bond with his brother-in-law, Mark, who was Leonard’s human calendar, personal driver, listening ear, caretaker, and spiritual advisor.
The most important point in Leonard’s life was when Leonard repented of his sins and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior many years ago. Throughout the years, Leonard and Shawna shared many conversations about faith and salvation.
Leonard was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mims and Berothia. His paternal grandparents, James Sr, and Corinne, his father James Jr., his sister Talonda, and his favorite aunt and uncle, Charles and Cora Brewer.
Leonard leaves to carry on his legacy his two sons, Devin (Shiamber) and Joveon; his grandchildren, Ayanna, Devyn, Odessey, Ivy, Joveon James Jr., and Jayden James; his mother, Josephine, siblings, Shawna (Mark) and Corey (Suzanne), and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Leonard's life was full of perseverance, loyalty, creativity, and love for his family and friends. His humorous spirit, unforgettable laugh and smile, and unwavering faith will live through those who knew him.
While our hearts mourn his transition, we rejoice in the assurance that he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior.
