Letha came to Dallas @ 16 years old along with two of sisters; Joely & Jeanie (Juanita). They rented an apt together in old East Dallas. Her first job was at the Cokesbury bookstore. She fondly talked about riding the trolley to & from work.
She met Paul Ray Lewis, both were 24 yrs old when they married on New Years Eve, 1947. She continued to work while he finished his accounting degree @ SMU. Then was a stay-at-home mom until they divorced in 1969 while all the girls were still in their teens.
So once again out in the workforce she found a job in the children’s dept @ the Neiman Marcus, NorthPark store which combined her love of shopping with a paycheck. Of course, she did immediately take advantage of the 25% merchandize discount. Over the next few decades she also worked at several other retail shops.
Sometime during her ‘50’s, as she was not one to smoke or drink & hobbies to speak of other than shopping, she discovered gambling, specifically playing the one-arm-bandit slot machines. Las Vegas & New Orleans were two of her favorites spots. But most often, she hopped on one of the chartered casino buses for two day trips to the Choctaw casino in Oklahoma. Many times winning jack pots of $2500 up to $5K.
May she Rest in Peace.
