

Liem Som Oei was born on May 6, 1942, in Semarang, Indonesia, to Liong Thay Oei and Tjhioe Nio Liem. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Swan Nio Liem. He graduated from Karangturi High School in Semarang before pursuing his lifelong calling in medicine. He earned his medical degree from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.
On July 7, 1973, he married the love of his life, Kim Lian Thung in Leuven, Belgium. Together they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on family, faith, and service to others.
Dr. Oei dedicated 35 years of his life to caring for patients as a respected nephrologist and internist in Sioux City, Iowa. Known for his compassion, wisdom, and commitment to his patients, he was deeply valued by colleagues and the community he served. Those who knew him remember his quiet strength, thoughtful nature, and the steady guidance he offered to both his family and those in his care.
Outside of his medical career, Liem Som enjoyed traveling, reading, history, classical music, and studying military technology. He was also actively involved in his church and found great meaning in his faith and community.
He was preceded in death by his father, Liong Thay Oei; his mother, Tjhioe Nio Liem; his stepmother, Swan Nio Liem; and his brother, Liem Hok Oei.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Kim Lian; his children, Bing (Carryl) and Meyling (Chet); and his cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Allyson, Caeden, and Asher. He is also survived by his older brother, Liem Tjhoen Oei (Mei Lan Oei), his younger brother, Liem Sioe Oei, and many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.
Visitation will be held from 4:00–8:00 p.m. on March 27, 2026, at Calvary Hill Chapel. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on March 28, 2026, at Calvary Hill Main Mausoleum North Chapel with Father Vincent Lin officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
