Loy was raised in Roseland Homes “The North Dallas Projects,” a community that remained an important part of his story and the lifelong relationships he carried with him. He attended North Dallas High School.
From an early age, Loy had a gift for entertaining. A talented dancer and gifted rapper, he could command a room. He had a larger-than-life spirit that followed him throughout his life. Loy had a deep and abiding love for God. He loved Jesus openly and was never reluctant to speak about his faith.
In 2008, Loy married the love of his life, Shannon Begay-Nelson. They shared a rich and enduring love story, and for 19 years Shannon stood tirelessly by his side through life’s joys and challenges. Their bond was one of love, companionship and devotion.
Loy was the proud father of Loy Nelson Jr. and Desmond Nelson, and grandfather of four grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Shannon; his sons, Loy Jr. and Desmond; his four grandchildren; his father Loyce Hampton, his cherished aunt, Helen Rochelle; his dear uncle, Ollie Nelson (Aunt Penny); his siblings; nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends. Loy shared an especially close bond with his cousins. Though cousins by relation, many loved him like a brother—a bond built over a lifetime of shared history, laughter and love.
Loy was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Patricia Nelson, and his beloved grandmother, Beatrice Nelson.
