Lucy Rita (nee Canova ) Bullard, age 95, died on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Baylor University Medical Center after a brief hospitalization. Lucy was born on August 4, 1922 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, the younger of two daughters born to Sam Canova and his wife, Mary Russo. Lucy’s deep and abiding faith in God grew steadily from the time of her baptism at Ascension Catholic Church, Donaldsonville, through her formative years as she celebrated her first communion and confirmation at Annunciation Catholic Church in New Orleans. As a girl, Lucy exhibited an aptitude for sketching, painting and fine needlework. Her calm demeanor and gentle touch meshed perfectly with her desire to pursue a career in nursing. She received her nursing degree from DePaul University in Chicago, where she excelled in the field of pediatrics. A lifelong learner, Lucy never tired of reading medical journals or taking courses to stay current with new treatments and technology. It was when she was providing exceptional care for young Don Bullard, a terminally ill patient at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN that Lucy met and fell in love with his older brother, Jesse T. Bullard. After a brief courtship, the two were married and enjoyed 60 years of life together, traveling the world with the US military before finally settling in Dallas, Texas in 1970. Mrs. Lucy Bullard is survived by her husband, Dr. Jesse T. Bullard, her sister, Mrs. May Weaver of Yakima, WA, a nephew, Gary R. Weaver, two nieces, Carol M. Weaver and Judith A. Wert and Dr. Bullard’s two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Oldner of Little Rock, AR and Ms. Terry Bullard of Hopewell, VA. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Dennis F. Weaver. Mrs. Lucy Bullard will be buried on Monday, November 6 at 2:15pm at a brief graveside service at the DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkway, Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to fund projects of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul (daughtersips.org) whose abiding principle follows Christ’s words: “So long as you do it to the least of these my brethren, you do it unto me.”
