Rev. Spurlock touched so many lives with his infectious smile, humor, and kind heart. It all started on July 22, 1950, when he was born to Lugene, Sr. and Minnie Spurlock in Madisonville, Texas. He attended Madisonville Schools and was called to preach while a junior in high school at the age of 16. Upon graduation, he moved to Dallas to attend Bishop College. On November 21, 1973, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Lackey, and they were blessed with one daughter, Amy, who preceded her father in death. His educational experiences include: Master of Arts in Worship Leadership from Dallas Baptist University, Bachelor of Arts with a major in Religion and Philosophy from Bishop College, Corporate Coach from Texas Baptist Coaching, and Conflict Management - Dispute Resolution in Lakewood, Ohio. Pastoral experiences include: St. Matthew Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, Iron Wheel Baptist Church of Nacogdoches, Texas, Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, and Fresh Start Community Baptist Church of Glenn Heights, Texas. Other highlights include: Teaching for Red Oak ISD; serving as President of the Ministers’ Lyceum - Bishop College; Dallas Baptist Association Ministers’ Conference; Nacagdoches Ministers’ Alliance, Board Member of Glenn Heights Police Review Committee; Board of Directors of Houston Heights Drug Rehab Center, Houston, Texas; Recording Secretary of the Independence District Association; Chairman of the Ministers Institute of the Houston Metropolitan Baptist Association; “African-American Banquet” speaker for the Dallas Baptist Association; and Life Coach for the Texas Baptist Church Planners. He had the distinct honor of delivering the “Late Night Sermon” for the L.K. Williams Ministers Institute, and has preached throughout the country. His book, A New Look at Methuselah, was published in 2003. Rev. Spurlock has been awarded the title of Pastor Emeritus of Fresh Start Church. The church is currently under construction in Glenn Heights, Texas. Although he will not walk through the doors of the church he organized down here, he will walk around Heaven where there is another Fresh Start that he called a Place of “No Mores”; no more pain, no more sorrows, no more sickness, and no more crying. Waiting for him beyond Heaven’s gates is his beloved daughter, Amy, his parents, two brothers, his mother-in-law, and pastor Rev. Tyler Carter. Missing him already is his devoted and loving wife of 42 years, Carolyn; his favorite sister-in-law, Madaline Lackey, niece, Meshundra Lackey, and great nephew, Chanceller Lackey; brother, Robert Spurlock (Felicia); sisters, Minnie Spurlock, Johnnie Nellums, Mary Jordan, and Blanche Spurlock; uncle, Sterling Leonard; and many other family and friends.
