Margaret Minnett Hooton was born February 28, 1941 in Dallas, Texas to Dr. John Minnett and his wife Lydia. She grew up in Dallas and graduated from Highland Park High school in 1959. She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art in 1963. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
After college, Margaret worked for Neiman Marcus designing displays in their downtown store. She married Bill Hooton on June 28, 1967 and they settled in Dallas. Margaret and Bill had three daughters, Lydia, Brooke and Mandy. The Hootons were a fixture in their community and loved to entertain and travel. Their house was full of love, laughter, music, friends and family. Margaret was also a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, the Dallas Country Club, the Dallas Woman’s Club and Mary K. Craig Class.
Margaret was a lifelong artist, talented in many mediums although her preference was oil painting. She was happiest when working on a new painting or spending time with her family and her dog Annie and cats Evie and Mama. She was a wonderful and caring mother, and her children and grandchildren loved her more than anything. She had the ability to take joy in the little things and had a dry and clever sense of humor. She had a profound sense of gratitude for her life, her family, friends and animals. Margaret charmed everyone she met with her gracious, giving nature and fun-loving personality. She will be missed by so many.
Margaret leaves behind her daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia Jordan, Brooke Elder and husband Scott, Mandy Rutherford and husband John, and grandchildren Maggie Jordan, Sarah Elder, Will Elder, Tegan Rutherford and Piper Rutherford. She is also survived by her brother John Minnett and his wife Betsy, sister-in-law Mary Hardin and her husband Tim and nieces and nephews John D. Minnett and wife Crissy, Ginnie Noe and husband Bob, Bill Mers, Stewart Mers and wife Alicia.
The family would like to thank the many people who assisted Margaret during the last years of her life. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the SPCA of Dallas. A celebration of her life will be held at Highland Park Presbyterian Church on Monday, February 12 at 2:00 pm.
